a year agoThe cathedral of Belluno, or more precisely the cathedral basilica of San Martino, is the most important church in Belluno. It is located in Piazza Duomo, in the historic center. It is the cathedral of the diocese of Belluno-Feltre. It was elevated to the dignity of a minor basilica on June 18, 1980 by Pope John Paul II. A simple (unfinished) façade in exposed stone, divided vertically into three parts with the lower sides, defines the external volume of the building; incorporates a recovered Romanesque tile decorated with phytomorphic motifs. A rich Baroque portal and two Gothic windows open in the lower and middle part; the upper part, ending with a tympanum which rests on entablature supported by pilasters, has a central rose window closed by a glass on which the saints Gioatà, Lucano and Martino are depicted. The interior of the basilica, of majestic appearance, has Renaissance lines even the height of the pillars gives the push upwards, typical of Gothic churches. The space is divided into three naves, cut transversely by seven bays. The presbytery has a solemn layout with triple rows of stalls; the dome is airy and full of light. Beyond the last major arch opens the semicircular apse, the basin of which was frescoed by Antonio Ermolao Paoletti with a triumphal Assunta. Among the works of distinguished artists kept in the church, two paintings by Gaspare Diziani stand out for their compositional complexity, one depicting Saints Carlo, Francesco di Sales, Gaetano da Thiene and Andrea Avellino, and the other the Conversion of Saint Paul. The representation of the Holy Family that adorns one of the altars in the left aisle is due to the hand of Egidio Dall'Oglio. The organ, from 1945, was installed by the Mascioni company. At the exit of the sacristy there is the high baroque bell tower, designed by the Messina architect Filippo Juvara (who never came to Belluno). Bishop Gaetano Zuanelli, a friend of Juvara, commissioned the work from him; the bishop received a reworked, readapted and re-proportioned project for the cathedral (copy of the bell tower of the Turin cathedral). The works began in 1732 and were interrupted in 1735 for economic reasons. The construction work arrived just below the belfry and so that posterity could clearly remember how far the erection of the bell tower had arrived, Msgr. Zuanelli wanted to have the ark of cav. Federico degli Azzoni of the fourteenth century; the work resumed and was definitively completed on July 16, 1747. Castellavazzo stone and other materials were used to build it. It measures a height of 71.98 meters (angel on top included) and cost a total of 150,000 Venetian lire. The angel, modeled in wood on the design of Andrea Brustolon, is clad in copper and is 4.63 meters high. On the slope towards the river Piave you can see an inscription on the wall of the tower attributable to the architect designer. The bell tower contains a bell concert of 4 bells mounted "in motion" (the 3 major bells are synchronized with each other), merged by the Premiata Fonderia De Poli by Revine Lago (Vittorio Veneto, TV) in 1934 with a sonello that is also impetuous. The plenum rings on the most important occasions.
